National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) - Grant, Equity or Loan Funding

One of the NFVF’s strategic objectives is to increase the number of South African films and previously disadvantaged individuals producing them.  Production funding is given for feature films, short films and documentaries. In addition, the NFVF sets aside a R1m grant each year for the purchase of archive material for feature-length and hour-long documentaries. 

The National Film and Video Foundation provides film and video-related funding in four categories:

• Education and training.
  
• Development funding.
  
• Production funding.
  
• Marketing and distribution.
  

Only one application per individual or organisation will be accepted. Funding may take the form of a grant, investment or loan depending on the type of application and project. However, since the NFVF has a policy of recouping the money from feature film development, television concepts and production as well as documentary production funding, this finance is likely to take the form of a loan.

Eligibility criteria

• South African individuals.
  
• South African companies and organisations with relevant experience and a credible track record.
  
• New and emerging film-makers or writers who have a production company attached to the project.

Application process

Application Forms can be downloaded or alternatively be obtained from national and local film industry organisations, provincial film offices and commissions. Their Funding Criteria document will assist you to understand the criteria specific to each fund.
